Summer School

In August 2023 a group of six guild members attended the bi-annual week long summer school run by the association. We travelled up to Harper Adams University near Telford on Saturday all excited and hoping we had remembered everything we might need for the workshops.

The University grounds were beautifully kept, possibly helped by the horticultural courses! We were housed in very comfortable student accommodation and plenty of tea was supplied. The food was really good and certain members enjoyed a cooked breakfast everyday!

The courses were many and various. Those of us lucky enough to be attending were all doing different subjects. These were designing yarns, split ply braiding, nuno felting, weaving words, needle felted figures and soft basketry.

Liz – Designing Yarns

Liz designed a range of beautiful yarns using images as inspiration

Sal – Nuno Felting

Sal used a range of fibre, fabric and lots of elbow grease to produce a lovely striking reversible dress. Nuno felting is a unique combination of fabric and fibre and the resulting texture is quite mesmerising.

Anna – Weaving Words

Anna found that many of the group had prepared their projects. She told herself not to panic and stay calm….and so her word presented itself! Tapestry is very dense and progress is always slow so to produce these beautiful curvy words was a real achievement.

Sandra – Soft Basketry

Sandra spent the week creating a range of different baskets and woven objects out of dried plant materials including hemerocallis and pine needles, sourced mostly from her own garden. Some of the stitched baskets were very hard on the hands but the results were very pleasing.
